Blog 41/ They Didn’t Just Leave: A Latte on What’s Really Happening to Black Women at Work
It was never our lack. It was always the culture.
Let’s sit with this for a moment.
Because the narrative sounds simple.
“Black women are leaving the workplace.”
It’s clean.
It’s easy.
It’s convenient.
But it’s not the whole story.
And lately, I’ve found myself in conversation—more than a few times—with people across different spaces, different roles, and different perspectives… all circling around the same quiet shift.
An HR professional.
Women who have experienced sudden changes firsthand.
Others observing from the outside, asking different questions, offering different interpretations.
And while the perspectives weren’t identical…
there was a shared recognition that something is changing.
Not loudly.
Not all at once.
But steadily.
In ways that are hard to name in the moment—
but hard to ignore over time.
Some described roles shifting without warning.
Others spoke about being overlooked in ways that didn’t quite add up.
Some felt the ground move beneath them in spaces they once felt secure in.
And in one conversation, a different question was raised:
Is this happening to all women?
A fair question.
One worth asking.
Because yes—there are broader shifts happening in workplaces across the country.
Changes in priorities.
Changes in structure.
Changes in what is being valued… and what is not.
But even within that broader conversation, there are layers.
And when you listen closely—
really listen—
you begin to notice that not all experiences within that shift are the same.
Because for Black women, the impact often feels… deeper.
More abrupt.
More disorienting.
More difficult to recover from.
Not just professional shifts—
but emotional ones.
Not just changes in role—
but disruptions in stability.
Not just movement—
but moments that feel like breaking.
And that distinction matters.
Because it reminds us that while a trend may appear broad on the surface…
its weight is not always evenly distributed.
What may feel like adjustment for some…
can feel like displacement for others.
And what may be framed as transition…
can land as loss.
Not always visible.
Not always acknowledged.
But felt.
Quietly.
Personally.
Collectively.
And maybe that’s why this moment feels different.
Because it’s not just about who is leaving.
It’s about what people are experiencing before they ever make the decision to go.
It’s about what shifts in an environment
when people no longer feel fully seen, fully supported, or fully held.
And what it costs—
to stay in spaces where that feeling lingers.
So yes—
there may be exits.
There may be pivots.
There may be new paths being chosen.
But underneath all of that…
there are stories.
Stories of navigating change.
Stories of making sense of the unexpected.
Stories of holding it together when things don’t quite align the way they once did.
And even in that—
there is something worth honoring.
Because choosing to move, to pivot, to protect your peace
in the midst of uncertainty…
That’s not weakness.
That’s awareness.
That’s strength.
That’s discernment.
And even now—
in the middle of all of this—
We still keep it moving.
Black women are still showing up.
Still building.
Still leading.
Still creating.
Still finding ways to hold onto themselves
in environments that may not always know how to hold them.
So maybe this isn’t just a story about leaving.
Maybe it’s a story about what people are navigating
before they ever get there.
And what it means
to remain whole—
even when everything around you is shifting.
And if this season has stretched you in ways you’re still learning to name…
you are not alone in that process of becoming.
Faith Over Fragility was written for the moments when strength feels quiet,
and becoming feels heavy—but necessary.
